Mega Churches in the African-American Community

NPR reports on the rise of Mega Churches in the African-American community. They are drawing an unprecedented number of worshippers. But, according to leaders of more traditional African-American churches, they preach a "prosperity gospel" of individual wealth that lacks substance and betrays the legacy of Martin Luther King.

I heard one of the megachurch leaders who read about this indicate that from he had encountered displeasure from the traditional sources but it was unwarranted because the megachurches are financially strong enough to aid the community whereas the older model has failed to keep in step with the times.

Sour grape, maybe, on the traditionalists' part, which is not unusual in church history.
