A Latin-American Pope?

I hope the college of cardinals selects a Latino as the next pope.

Why? I think that Jazmin Gomez, store worker in Santiago, Chile says it best: "our Lord was from the poor and the poor are here."

See this Reuters article, Latin Americans Hope Next Pope Is One of Their Own.

What about the Nigerian cardinal?

That'd be awesome too from my perspective.

Although I'm sure Catholics in Latin America would argue that they have many more Catholics than does Africa.

Indeed, 87% of the Latin American population is Catholic, numbering nearly 500 million people. Compare that to 150 million Catholics in Africa, who only comprise 17% of the African population. Not that these statistics are dispositive, but I would agree that Latinos would justifiably feel shunned if the next Pope is not one of their own. (Note that there are 6 times as many Catholics in Latin America as there are in the U.S. (80 million, 24% of the population), and nearly twice as many as there are in Europe (275 million, 38% of the European population)).

As a Latino and former practicing Catholic, I will rejoice should the Cardinals elect a Latin American to be the next Pope. However, I do not expect it to happen.

Addressed to no one in particular: do we think the faith of Latin America will be shaken if the next pope is NOT from Latin America?

P.S. I'm wondering about this given the AMAZING statitics cited by Burleez. Putting your numbers together, there are roughly as many Catholics in Latin America (500 million) as in Europe, the United States and Africa COMBINED (505 million). If you counted Latinos in the United States on the other side, the scales would certainly tip. I agree that Latinos would "justifiably feel shunned" if the next pope is not Latin American. But would they "vote with their feet" so to speak?

I think it would be great to have a Latin American pope. But, I've got $50 on Ratzinger from Germany.

Any takers?
